Abel’s journey
presented as a timeline

Abel’s history has been shaped through the steady accumulation of technical expertise and on-site experience. Here, we present that journey as a timeline.

1965

Company founded as Kinki Yakuhin Kogyo. Entered the field of stainless steel electrolytic polishing surface treatment

1971

Independently developed the stainless steel coloring method “Kin Color”, mainly applied to architectural metal fittings

1978

Developed fully automated electrolytic polishing equipment in-house

1980

Installed new automated Kin Color processing equipment

1985

Began joint development of stainless steel electrolytic coloring “Lumina Color” with Kawasaki Steel Corporation

1986

Constructed new factory building and installed Japan’s first Lumina Color electrolytic coloring facility

1989

Succeeded in coloring stainless steel mesh in six colors

1990

Developed a fingerprint-resistant satin finish after blast processing

1992
  • Developed Lumina Color Light Black and Light Bronze
  • Developed Super Black, which allows coloring even on welded areas
1993
  • Changed company name from Kinki Pharmaceutical Industry Co., Ltd. to Abel Co., Ltd.
  • Developed color blast “Abel Color” and adopted for JR Shinkansen and other rail vehicles
1996

Installed precision electrolytic polishing equipment for semiconductor-related applications

1999

Installed precision internal electrolytic polishing equipment for tanks and piping

2002

Constructed a Class 1000 cleanroom facility

2006

Certified under the Act for the Advancement of Manufacturing Base Technologies for SMEs (Supporting Industry Program)

2007
  • Approved by Osaka Prefecture for the “Management Innovation Plan”
  • Established a precision parts inspection room
2008
  • Selected as one of the 100 Energetic Manufacturing Companies in Kansai
  • Featured in Nikkei Manufacturing June issue “SME Relay Connected by Technology”
  • Developed mirror-finish black stainless steel “Piano Black” and registered trademark
2009
  • Installed large-scale electrolytic polishing processing line “Long-Length Line”
  • Adopted for Kyoto University Institute of Advanced Energy “ADMIRE Project”
  • Established Kanto Sales Office
  • Obtained ISO9001:2008 certification
  • Selected for Manufacturing Subsidy Program and received Yao City SME Regional Economic Contribution Award
  • Adopted for SPring-8 Strategic Utilization Program
2010
  • Featured on Kansai TV program “Super News Anchor”
  • Obtained ISO14001:2004 certification
  • Certified under the Supporting Industry Program for advanced SME manufacturing technologies
2011

“Abel Black®” adopted for Tokyo Skytree

2012
  • Black stainless steel with Abel Black® featured in Nikkei Design August issue

  • Installed solar power generation system on headquarters rooftop

2013
  • Selected for SME prototype development subsidy program

  • Selected for SME overseas expansion feasibility study support program

  • Started mass production of Abel Black® black coil material

  • Article on black coil mass production published in Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun

  • Received the Japan Manufacturing Award, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award

  • Received Yao City SME Regional Economic Contribution Award

2014
  • Registered trademark for Abel Black® coil material “Black Belt SUS”

  • Received Kinki Regional Invention Award, Director-General of SME Agency Encouragement Prize

2015
  • Featured on NHK WORLD “Science View” in “J-Innovators Takumi”
  • Received Yao City SME Regional Economic Contribution Award
2016
  • Expanded “Black Belt SUS” production line

  • Registered trademark “Abel Black®” as proprietary surface treatment technology

2017
  • Obtained ISO9001:2015 certification
  • Adopted for Lexus RC special edition “F SPORT Prime Black”
2018
  • Received Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award for Science and Technology
  • President Hideki Isai received the Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays (Spring 2018)
  • Exhibited at Maison & Objet 2018 in Paris
2019

Change in executive leadership: Hideki Iai appointed Chairman, Kosuke Iai appointed President

2020

Selected as a Regional Future Driving Company

2022

Adopted for Lexus IS “Mode Black S / Mode Glitter”

2023
